Ahem! So if it's finished what are those pins doing there? Well the centre pieces are removable in case I get sick of that fabric, want plain denim or just want to wear it without the front. I'm still working the buttonholes out, and until then I wont attach the fronts as it will be easier to sew the buttonholes off jacket than on.
Excuse my dress form, she's fatter than me. The jacket does actually button up the front on me. The contrast fabric you see on the front is actually the lining fabric and peeks out from various hems on the jacket as I wear it. You can also see it on the back of the cuffs, just not in these photos.

Don't you love these super-cute cuffs?

And the back pleating detail. If it wasn't for the back pleats you could actually wear this jacket fully reversible. But since the pleats look weird inside out it's a no go. Still I'm not complaining. I kept the jean seams to just the back parts of the jacket as I didn't want things to look too busy with the trims I'm going to add to the front.
So clever! What a brilliant idea to make it almost zone-front! It looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI hear you are doing the buttonholes by hand! (I cheat and cover machine ones with a few hand stitches to make them look accurate, because my hand buttonholes are hopeless). Do you know how to do bound buttonholes? I love them!
Thanks, I thought it rather perfectly solved my two main problems.
ReplyDelete1. Peplums across the front make everyone look fat. I realised at that point there is a reason you rarely see it on extant examples.
2. My front bodice did not extend low enough to create a pleasing illusion of a long, slender torso.
This was the solution which would not require me to unpick the side seams. I love my laziness...Lol! But truthfully I think it really adds to the design as well. It did look so bleh all denim and plain.
It's not so much I'm getting historical, more that I manage to stuff up machine button holes every single time. Was hoping to find a way to avoid that by doing it by hand.
It looks brilliant!! And yes, those cuffs are allkind of prettyful - what is it about that style of cuff that gets me all unnecessary? Love them. The fabrics look great together, too. I'm hand-sewing some buttonholes too... bit of a pain, but no as difficult as I'd feared. You're nearly done - yay! :D
